VR/Formas/RJ mentored grant-writing workshops: Early career and Project grants Spring 2023
Are you planning to apply for either an early-career research grant (starting grant/etableringsbidrag or similar) OR a Project grant from the Swedish Research Council (VR), Formas and/or Riksbankens Jubileumsfond (RJ) in the spring 2023?
If so, you may be interested in one of the grant-writing workshops organised by Junior Faculty and the Researcher Services at Uppsala University. The workshops have as target early career researchers at TekNat, MedFarm and HumSam.
Workshop 1: Mentored early-career workshop:
TekNat/MedFarm: You are between 2 and 7 years (for VR) or 8 years (for Formas) after completion of doctorate (in both cases adjusted for deductible time, e.g. parental leave) and plan to apply for an early-career project research grant (starting grant/etableringsbidrag or similar, not postdoc fellowships).
HumSam: You are early career and are planning to apply for any type of grant (VR, Formas and/or RJ) including postdoc grant (3 years after completion of doctorate) as a project leader.
Workshop 2. Peer-feedback mid-career workshop, all domains: You are more than 7-8 years after completion of doctorate and plan to apply for a project research grant (VR projektbidrag, Formas forsknings- och utvecklingsprojekt or RJ project or Infrastructure for Research) or similar.
During the writing workshops, groups of usually 3-5 applicants meet (with a mentor for the mentored workshops). The schedule and format of these meetings are decided by the mentors/groups but usually amount to between 2 and 4 meetings. Groups are formed based on similar topics/review panels as far as possible and all participants are expected to read and comment on each others’ applications. Mentors are researchers with ample experience in writing and reviewing grant applications.
Workshop schedule
§ Deadline to apply: Friday December 2 (see below for instructions on how to apply)
§ End of December: information of the groups formed is sent out to participants
§ Mid January: JF Kick-Off Seminar for the grant-writing workshop with VR/RJ/Formas (open for all, not just workshop participants)
§ Mid January to grant deadline in March/April (depending on grant): groups meet, usually 2-4 times, according to their own schedule
Good to know: The grant-writing workshop is a package of seminars, usually at least a kick-off seminar with information about VR and Formas and a another seminar related to grant application. Please, check out the Junior Faculty calendar for other seminars.
How to apply
The application form is available until December 2. Before you fill out this application form, please make sure that you have read through the guidelines from VR, Formas and/or RJ regarding the grant you plan to apply for. The calls for 2022 are not yet out, so use the information from the 2022 calls. To fill in the application, you will need to submit a title, preliminary project summary, primary and secondary review panel and a short motivation for participation in the workshop.
Note that we ask that you only apply if you are sure that you will be able to devote enough time to write your application, read and comment on the other participants’ applications and attend the workshop meetings. Participation is important so if you are accepted to the workshop but do not attend without valid reason, you may not be eligible for the 2023 workshop. For the mentored workshops, formation of workshop groups is always dependent on the availability of mentors and thus participation can never be guaranteed.

Junior Faculty’s Mentored and Non-mentored Grant-writing Workshops
General description of the workshop
The workshop is organized by Junior Faculty (JF) and Researcher Services at Uppsala University every year. It starts mid-January with a kick-off seminar (not compulsory, but highly recommended) with information on the VR/RJ/Formas grants. The kick-off is followed by meetings in the mentored groups (usually 3-5 participants per group). At the mentored grant-writing workshops, all participants are expected to read and comment on each other’s applications.
The number of participants is limited and depends on the availability of mentors. Therefore, we ask that you only apply if you are sure that you will be able to devote enough time to write your application and participate in the workshop.
Before you fill out the application form, please make sure that you have read through the guidelines from VR, RJ and/or Formas regarding the grant(s) you plan to apply for. If the calls have not yet been published, use the information on the calls from previous years.
If you have any questions, please contact JF administrator at juniorfaculty@bmc.uu.se.
Timeline
- Early November: workshop announced by e-mail sent to Junior Faculty’s mailing lists; the call is published under How to apply as well;
- End of November: application deadline;
- Early December: applicants receive an email with information about their group;
- Early January: kick-off seminar with the major national funding bodies (VR/RJ/Formas);
- Depending on available funding for the activity, JF may add a couple of seminars on how to write successful applications with an external company and/or Unit for Professional English (UPE);
- Mid-January until mid-March: mentored group meetings (scheduled by mentors/groups).
How to apply
You can apply for Junior Faculty’s mentored and non-mentored grant-writing workshop in November every year.
If you would like to apply, fill out the registration form. The registration form is published when the call for applications is active.

Mentored VR grant writing workshop for Humanities and Social Sciences
Are you a junior researcher in the Humanities and Social Sciences (HumSam) and planning to apply for a research project grant (projektbidrag) from the Swedish Research Council (VR) in 2019? If so, then Junior Faculty’s mentored grant writing workshop is probably something for you!
We have recruited several researchers with extensive experience in writing and reviewing grant applications to act as mentors in this workshop. Workshop applicants will be divided into groups of 3-5 people, each of which will be assigned one mentor. The groups will meet around 3 times in the period January-March 2019 to discuss and comment on each other’s applications (the frequency, schedule, and format of these meetings are decided by the mentors/groups). Mentor groups will be formed based on similar topics/review panels as far as possible.
Since the availability of mentors limits the number of participants, we ask that you only apply if you are confident that you will be able to devote time on writing your application, comment on the other participants’ applications and attend the workshop meetings.
Before you apply, please note that
- The workshop is intended for junior researchers (loosely defined as “anyone with a PhD, but without a permanent senior position”).
- We ask you to submit a preliminary project abstract as part of your application. For full details, see application form.
- If you are accepted to the workshop but do not attend without valid reason, you may not be eligible for the 2020 workshop.
Welcome with your application!
