Grant writing workshop

Are you planning to apply for either an early-career research grant (Starting grant/etableringsbidrag or similar) OR a Project grant from the Swedish Research Council (VR), FORMAS, FORTE and/or Riksbankens Jubileumsfond (RJ) in the spring 2024?

If so, you may be interested in one of the mentored grant-writing workshops organised by Junior Faculty and the Researcher Services at Uppsala University. The workshops have as target early career researchers at TekNat, MedFarm and HumSam.

There are two types of Workshop:

Workshop 1: Mentored early-career workshop:

TekNat/MedFarm: You are between 2 and 7 years (for VR) or 0-8 years (for FORMAS) after completion of doctorate (in both cases adjusted for deductible time, e.g. parental leave) and plan to apply for an early-career project research grant (starting grant/etableringsbidrag or similar, not postdoc fellowships).

HumSam: You are early career and are planning to apply for any type of grant (VR, Formas, and/or RJ) including postdoc grant (3 years after completion of doctorate) as a project leader.

Each group has a mentor (a senior researcher) who will give feedback to your grant proposals; moreover, all participants are expected to read and comment on each other’s applications. In case that there are many applicants and we don’t have enough mentors, there might be some groups that might only have peer-feedback.

Workshop 2. Peer-feedback mid-career workshop, all domains:

You are more than 7-8 years after completion of doctorate and plan to apply for a project research grant (VR projektbidrag, Formas forsknings- och utvecklingsprojekt or RJ project or Infrastructure for Research) or similar.

Each group is composed by 2-5 participants that are expected to read and comment on each other’s applications.

During the writing workshops , groups of usually 3-5 applicants meet (with a mentor for the mentored workshops ). The schedule and format of these meetings are decided by the mentors/groups but usually amount to between 2 and 4 meetings. Groups are formed based on similar topics/review panels as far as possible and all participants are expected to read and comment on each others’ applications. Mentors are researchers with ample experience in writing and reviewing grant applications.

Workshop schedule

  • Deadline to apply: Sunday December 18 (see below for instructions on how to apply)
  • End of December: information of the groups formed is sent out to participants
  • 16th January: JF Kick-Off Seminar for the grant-writing workshops with VR/FORTE/Formas as well as success stories and Reviewer perspective (open for all, not just workshop participants)
  • Mid January to grant deadline in March/April (depending on grant): groups meet, usually 2-4 times, according to their own schedule

Good to know: The grant-writing workshop is a package of seminars, usually at least a kick-off seminar and a another seminar grant application writing. Please, check out the Junior Faculty e-mails for other seminars.

How to apply

The application form is available until December 2. Before you fill out this application form, please make sure that you have read through the guidelines from VR, Formas, Forte, and/or RJ regarding the grant you plan to apply for. The calls for 2024 are not yet out, so use the information from the 2023 calls. To fill in the application, you will need to submit:

  • a title,
  • preliminary project summary,
  • primary and secondary review panel
  • a short motivation for participation in the workshop.

Note that we ask that you only apply if you are sure that you will be able to devote enough time to write your application, read and comment on the other participants’ applications and attend the workshop meetings. Participation is important so if you are accepted to the workshop but do not attend without valid reason, you may not be eligible for the 2024 workshop. For the mentored workshops , formation of workshop groups is always dependent on the availability of mentors and thus participation can never be guaranteed.
